“President Obama is making the right decision to call for Congressional debate on this difficult question,” Markey said in a statement released Saturday.
Markey stood by his position that a full debate is needed before the United States takes military action against Syria for the alleged use of chemical weapons against its own people.
However, Markey added that he thinks any action needs full international support and complete evidence.
“The use of chemical weapons is a heinous and despicable act that appears to be the work of a brutal dictator,” Markey said of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, “who has quashed dissent and killed innocent men, women, and children.”
He supports a debate, because he says the effects of a military strike against Syrian targets could have unknown and uncontrollable effects. “That’s why,” Markey concluded, “I am looking forward to a thorough, detailed debate that hears all sides. “
