Man to Have Beer in All 351 Mass. Towns for Charity

WESTFIELD (WGGB) — A Massachusetts man is making a special trip across the state. Saturday he made one of his final stops at the Westwood Bar in Westfield.

Todd Ruggere is stopping in all 351 Massachusetts towns across the Bay State over 365 days, having a beer in each one.

But it’s not just for fun.

Ruggere is raising money for the leading Children’s Cancer Research Center in Boston. He set out to raise $5,000, but has now raised almost $35,000.

He says the plan started when he asked himself a question. “I was sitting at work one day, and I was like, I wonder if I can name all 351 towns in Massachusetts,” Ruggere thought to himself, “so I took a piece of paper and pen and I only got to 147.”

After a week, he couldn’t believe how few he had recalled. So, he decided to have a beer in every one.

“I’ll drink Sam Adams, it’s my favorite beer, and then I said, ‘Oh, this might be a good way to raise money,’ and then it sort of just caught on.”

And he’s had some unique experiences along the way. Ruggere says the small island town of Gosnold heard about his story, and brought him out on a boat to meet their 22 residents.

But what if there’s no public bar to be found? “There’s about 40 towns that don’t have bars, so for those towns I’ll find someone that lives in those towns,” he said with a smile, “they invite me over, they have a cookout when I get there, people supply the Sam Adams. So everyone’s been really awesome.”

He says that he was touched by the smaller, poorer towns across the state that rallied around him and donated thousands of dollars.

As of Saturday, Ruggere has four towns to go before he reaches his goal.
