Swimmer Diana Nyad completed her 110-mile, 53-hour journey from Cuba to Florida Monday afternoon, making the 64-year-old the first person to finish the route without a shark cage to protect her. It was the fifth time Nyad had attempted the swim since her first try in 1978.
Nyad arrived on the shore of a Key West beach just before 2 p.m. ET and was assisted by a medic immediately upon making landfall, CNN reports.
The endurance swimmer told reporters and onlookers that she had three messages, according to CNN. “One is we should never ever give up. Two is you never are too old to chase your dreams. Three is it looks like a solitary sport, but it’s a team,” she said, according to CNN.
Nyad’s previous attempts had been thwarted by setbacks including asthma attacks, a lightning storm and paralyzing jellyfish stings.
