FOXBORO (WGGB) — Patriots running back Shane Vereen will miss a few weeks, after surgery to repair a broken bone in his wrist.
Vereen began the season as the second-string back, but led New England with 14 rushes for 101 yards in their opener on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. Vereen was the only player in the NFL to run for at least 100 yards so far in Week 1.
Fox Sports reported that Vereen played the entire game on Sunday with the injury, after breaking the bone on the first play of the game.
The surgery was scheduled for Monday.
Running back Steven Ridley was listed at the top of the Patriots depth chart, but was benched after fumbling against the Bills. Ridley ran for only 9 times for 46 yards.
The Patriots have plenty of depth at the position, but few have performed well thus far. LaGarrette Blount was uninspiring in his few rushes in Week 1. RB’s Brandon Bolden and recently re-acquired Leon Washington were both listed as inactive.
