Springfield Pays Tribute to Fallen Comrades, Lost on 9-11

Today the Springfield Fire and Police Departments gathered at a ceremony on Carew Street to pay tribute to their fallen comrades who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

This year marks the 12th year anniversary of the tragic events. At the site in Springfield today you can see American Flags and Springfield’s antique fire wagon. The ceremony includes the rolling out of equipment, tolling of the bell, laying of a wreath, a rifle salute and taps.

Also on display today, is the World Trade Center artifact donated to Springfield by the New York/New Jersey Port Authority. It is a section of a column that was once used to support one of the two buildings that is 12 feet long, 20 inches wide, 20 inches high and weighs 2,940 pounds.
