Board of Higher Education Wants WSU President to Explain Spending Issues

WSU PresidentWESTFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — The state has questions for Westfield State University President Evan Dobelle about his spending history and they want answers soon.

According to Katy Able, Associate Commissioner for External Affairs, the Board of Higher Education has sent a letter to Dobelle to set up a meeting with him so he can explain the spending issues.

Recently questions were raised by the school’s faculty members concerning spending at the university including a number of trips that Dobelle took.

“My concerns are that the president may have been spending money from the foundation and the university inappropriately,” explains Buzz Hoagland, Union Faculty President.

But Dobelle has told ABC40 in the past that the spending helps the university grow.

“I have spent money to globalize the institution, which is our number one strategic plan to make it a wireless institution. It all costs money, but we raise the money, we take people to dinner who give us tens of thousands of dollars. That’s what we do here,” says Dobelle.

On August 23 Governor Patrick called for the results of all audits concerning expenditures made by Dobelle to be put forth to the public within a month.  We’re now about a week-and-a-half away from that deadline.
