Two Trees Struck By Lightning in Deerfield

Deerfield Police Tree DamagedDEERFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Two trees in Deerfield were struck by lightning this afternoon when the stormy weather rolled through knocking down power lines and causing two road closures.

According to Deerfield Police Officer Adam Sokoloski, at about 2:30 this afternoon a tree on Mill Village Road was hit by lightning and so was a tree on Greenfield Road at 5 & 10.  Both were large in size forcing emergency crews to close the roads.

The Deerfield and South Deerfield Fire Departments along with police responded.

Sokoloski told ABC40 that power lines were damaged when the trees came down and there were some isolated outages in the area while WMECo worked to get power back.

Greenfield Road was re-opened at about 8:00 p.m. tonight and police say they expect Mill Village Road to be back open at 9:00 p.m.
