MEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley has officially joined the crowded field of Democratic candidates hoping to succeed Gov. Deval Patrick.

Coakley kicked off her campaign on Monday by greeting customers at a diner in her hometown of Medford. It was the first stop in a planned three-day tour of the state.

The 60–year-old Coakley told reporters she had learned from the mistakes she made in her last high-profile political race, when she was upset by Republican Scott Brown in the 2010 special election to succeed the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

Coakley was re-elected later that year to a second term as attorney general.

As governor, Coakley said she would work to rebuild the economy and modernize the state’s education system.

Five other Democrats and one Republican have announced runs.
