The Big E’s Al Lamountain Marks 50 Years at the Fair

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) – We have our first timers here and those who don’t miss one day during the stretch of the fair.

However, Al Lamountain has almost everyone beat. He has been at The Big E for 50 years!

“I started as a ticket taker…I did that for a few years,” he says.

Fulfilling almost every role, Lamountain is now in charge of the admissions department, overseeing over 200 employees.

“I enjoy this job very much, I really do. I get here between about 5 and 5:15 and I work until 9 at night on Monday through Thursday and until 10:00 at night on Friday and Saturday,” Lamountain explains.

And his wife doesn’t even get angry with him being gone all day and night long. In fact, she works here too, at the big yellow slide, where they first met!

“25 years ago…no, 30 years ago! I worked for him” says his wife, Eileen Lamountain.

“…and we just kept going together and finally we got married,” Al adds.

The Big E has changed through the years. He mentions the ticket machines now are modernized. There are also many new vendors.

“The crowds are bigger now and it was only 9 days back then, then to 12 days. Now, it runs 17 days.”

But the more there is, the better it is for the Lamountains. They spend quality time with each other, old friends and with new.

They both agree that each day is fresh and a new adventure.
