Police Make Arrest in Bizarre Shooting & Rollover Accident

SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WGGB) — Neighbors in the North End of Springfield are angry after a shootout in broad daylight. It happened just before five Friday afternoon on Main Street, and wreaked havoc in a neighborhood that’s sick of violence. When police arrived on scene, all that was left was an upside down Honda Accord, split down the middle by a fire hydrant, and riddled with bullet holes.

“Everybody was running here. And they were like ‘ohh somebody shot the car and it flipped over,'” Veronica Robinson said.

Police say someone fired several shots into the car, then it crashed into a second car and flipped. The woman in the second car ran to a nearby fire station for safety, but wasn’t hurt. Back at the scene both the shooters and whoever was in the Honda ran away.

“It’s daylight, it wasn’t night time. It’s scary,” Alba Andino said as she watched the wreckage being removed.

“I was scared, I was really scared at first, my heart was pounding,” Robinson said.

Neighbors say this is the second shooting in the area in one week. Robinson coaches youth sports in the city and has young siblings that witnessed Friday’s chaos. She wants the violence to end.

“I really do because when they are shooting, I’m like ‘there’s little kids out here!’ They play all over here, like they ride their bikes up and down the street,” Robinson said. “I don’t know what goes through people’s heads. What’s the point? That’s all.”

Police believe at least one person in the Honda was hurt. They spent the night piecing together the events, while other crews slowly removed the car without snapping the fire hydrant.

At this time we have been able to confirm that 22-year-old, Joshua Vasquez from Springfield has been arrested in connection with this incident. The Springfield Police Department says he was in the car that flipped over and then fled the scene.  Vasquez is being charged with Making a False Police Report, Malicious Damage to a Motor Vehicle and Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident.

Officer are still trying to figure out if anyone else was in the Honda and who the shooter was.
