Westfield State University President, Board Grilled on Spending

dobelleBOSTON (AP/WGGB) — State officials are voicing concern about reports of lavish spending by Westfield State University president Evan Dobelle and his use of school credit cards for personal expenses.

The state Board of Higher Education grilled university trustees on Friday and planned to meet privately with Dobelle later in the day.

Dobelle has repeatedly defended his spending, saying it brought a “return on investment” to the school in the millions of dollars.

But Commissioner of Higher Education Richard Freeland called the pattern of expenses “deeply distressing.”

Westfield trustees chairman Jack Flynn said policies were unquestionably violated but said his board would decide at a meeting next month whether those violations outweigh Dobelle’s accomplishments as president.

The meeting came one day after the state inspector general urged trustees to quickly scrutinize Dobelle’s spending.

Trustees will ultimately decided whether or not to discipline Dobelle.

Sounds like the same thing the government does. Everybody loves to spend someone else’s money.

I am a graduate of Westfield State College (University). I do not see the reason for Even Dobelle to be traveling worldwide looking for endowments and elite students, spending our tax dollars; and apparently scholarship money to do so. There are plenty of deserving students right here in Massachusetts that could use a hand up getting a college education.
It’s a small state school and should not try to compete with larger universities. That will just price it too high for most people if it gets too big.
I received an excellent education there in the 1980′s. I think Mr. Dobelle should stay in the community and work toward making Westfield State a better place without spending money that is not his to spend.

What a joke as they know exactly what they were spending. Yep not their money but taxpayer money so they could care less. Liars and Crooks.
