22-year-old Victim of Springfield Homicide Identified
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) – The victim of a homicide in the early hours of Saturday morning has been identified.
Springfield Police say 22-year-old John Alexander of Springfield was shot in the head just before 3a.m. Saturday morning.
Police responded to a call of shots fired at 28 Westminster Street. The city’s “Shotspotter” system was also activated. When police arrived on scene they found the victim being treated by witnesses. First responders gave him CPR and transported him to Baystate Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators at the scene determined that Alexander had been sitting inside his car when another car, described as a Silver Honda or Acura, pulled up. Someone reportedly got out of that car and shot Alexander before fleeing the scene. Police say they also found a handgun in the victim’s car.
Springfield Police have dubbed this a gang related shooting, and Springfield Police Commissioner William Fitchet has ordered additional patrols in the Mason Square area of Springfield. These patrols will continue until further notice.
The Springfield Police Detective Bureau is investigating this incident. Anyone with any information is asked to call the Detective Bureau at 413-787-6355 or simply “Text-a-Tip”.
