BOSTON (AP) — Jon Lester will start Game 1 of the AL division series for the Boston Red Sox.

Manager John Farrell confirmed the rotation on Wednesday after the team’s played an intersquad simulated game. John Lackey will start the second game, followed by Clay Buchholz. Jake Peavy would start a fourth game if it is necessary.

The rotation had been suspected ever since the Red Sox lined up their pitchers that way at the end of the regular season. Farrell held off making the announcement until he was sure everyone made it through Wednesday’s workout OK.

Game 1 is Friday night at Fenway Park. The Red Sox will play the winner of Wednesday night’s wild-card game between the Cleveland Indians and Tampa Bay Rays.
