Parents Fight Shooting Range Near Conn. School

4-04 CT GUN LAWBRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) — Parents and school officials are opposing a shooting range planned near a Bridgeport elementary school.

The Connecticut Post reports that residents and officials who are worried about gang violence in Connecticut’s largest city welcome plans by the Police Department to spend up to $850,000 in federal money to add a state-of-the-art training facility and shooting range with 10 firing lanes in an empty building.

Bridgeport police use an outdoor range in Monroe.

Juan Torrealba, president of the parent advisory council at the Cesar Batalla Elementary School, told school board members recently that a shooting range should not be placed across the street from a school.

Assistant Police Chief James Nardozzi says he understands parents’ concerns, but says the only weapons allowed would be those belonging to officers for practice.
