Springfield’s Municipal Group Celebrates 100th Anniversary
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — It’s the symbol of the City of Springfield.
The Municipal Group is made up of Symphony Hall, City Hall, and the 300-foot clocktower, the Campanile.
This year, it celebrates its 100th anniversary.
At an Friday afternoon press conference, plans were announced for a weekend long celebration in December.
The great grandson of Springfield’s mayor in 1913, John Denison, was in attendance. Jonathan Fantini Porter said his great-grandfather’s life was all about service.
“My great grandfather loved this city. He went away for school and came right back as soon as he had the first opportunity to. He dedicated his life to service in this community. He was a judge before he ran for mayor and as soon as he had an opportunity went right back to service,” says Porter.
ABC40 and FOX6 are the media sponsors for the weekend long celebration in December, which include the Springfield Symphony Orchestra’s holiday concert and a concert by 215th Army Band of the Massachusetts Army National Guard.
