Wrong Way Driver Hospitalized After Jumping from Highway

police-highwayCHICOPEE, Mass. (WGGB) – A Springfield man is in the hospital this morning after he reportedly jumped from a height of more than 20 feet.

The incident happened near Exit 3 on I-391 just after 4 o’clock this morning.

According to Massachusetts State Police, the 27-year-old was driving the wrong way on the highway when he swiped a garbage truck, totaling his car. The driver of the truck was uninjured.

The man then attempted to flee the scene, jumping from the elevated portion of the highway, roughly 20 to 30 feet. He sustained serious injuries to his legs and head, and was taken to Baystate Medical Center. There is no word on his condition.

State Police are still investigating the incident, but did say that alcohol was a factor in the accident.
