WESTFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — A brazen robbery in Westfield leaves business owners searching for answers.
Pictures taken by Westfield Police show what Union Mart looked like just moments after criminals broke in just after 12 a.m. Monday, and hid in the ceiling.
“As you see in the picture, there are still shards and nails hanging down. I can’t imagine that would be the most efficient way to do it,” says Westfield Police Captain Michael McCabe.
Police say the thieves used a ladder to get to up to the roof, and a crowbar to get into the buidling.
They then came down through the ceiling, making off with some cash and electronics – all while the clerk was in the store.
“For a while, we had a rash of those things that were going on a couple years ago, but I haven’t seen one like this one, ever. Usually they make them through vents, pushed through an air conditioner. You don’t see them tearing the roof off, normally,” Captain McCabe explains.
The store’s owners didn’t want to speak on camera about the incident.
The area is very close to some train tracks, which might have provided white noise, making it hard to hear the burglars.
At this point, it’s unclear if the robbers and the owners knew each other.
No arrests have been made yet.
The Westfield Police detective bureau is still investigating.
