Navigators Streamline Obamacare Enrollment

HUNTINGTON, Mass. (wggb) – For the last 2 weeks Americans have been able to enroll in the new health insurance plans enabled by the affordable care act. For many it’s meant headaches, overloaded websites and confusion .But there is help for those frustrated with the process.

To date 97% of Massachusetts already has health insurance.

So what impact will Obamacare have here?

More than you may think, seeing as though Commonwealth Care will be ending effective December 31st. For thousands that means re-enrolling in another plan.

But how will you know?

Navigators.

“We are relying on the community to really give us a hand to help with this effort that first and foremost is represented by the navigator program,” explained Jean Yang, Executive Director at Massachusetts Health Connector.

Nation-wide a navigator program is being set up to help enroll Americans into their plans offered by the Affordable Care Act. Here in Massachusetts there are 10 navigator designated centers, 3 in Western Mass. Trained navigators will serve to provide outreach to communities, education to Americans and enrollment assistance to anyone, not just those without insurance.

Yang told us, “for many of the existing members that this is an opportunity for them to explore newer options and better options as well.”

Including the new plans, there will also be changes to Mass Health and Medicaid.
It’s enough to make your head spin. Which is exactly why the navigator program was established.
To make sure people don’t opt out of enrolling, simply because they are overwhelmed.

“They are trained, and they are familiar with some of the existing options as well as the new options and they are also a lot more familiar with the it system,” said Yang.

So no matter if you’ve never had insurance, you’re insured through your employer, or your insurance comes through the state, when in doubt, find a navigator.

Here in Massachusetts residents do not need to go to www.HealthCare.gov to enroll.
Instead you can use www.MAHealthCare.org and enroll yourself. Or you can enroll by calling 1-877-MA-ENROLL.
