SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Last December, officers were dispatched to Renee Circle after a 21-year-old woman received an unexpected visit from her boyfriend, Samuel Hayes.
“An argument ensued when Mr. Hayes was inside of the apartment and the verbal altercation suddenly turned physical,” says Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.
The woman told police Hayes punched her several times, threw her to the floor and choked her – knowing she was 8 months pregnant with his child.
“She’s got a 4 year old who got up while the disturbance was taking place,” says Delaney “While he was busy putting that child back to bed forcefully, she was able to text her sister, ‘Samuel is in the house, he’s assaulting me, please call police,’ and she did right away.”
Delaney adds, “She called the police and when we arrived on the scene, Mr. Samuel Hayes was in front — a disturbance was still going on — and when they approached him, he assaulted the police officers.”
Police say it took a little while to handcuff Hayes. Once his hands were restrained, he began using his feet — attempting to kick the cruiser’s windows out.
“They had to use their pepper spray to calm him down and get him into the back seat,” says Delaney.
Once in custody, police charged Hayes with assault and battery on a knowingly pregnant female, aggravated assault, resisting arrest and destroying his girlfriend’s mother’s car, which was parked in the driveway during the assault.
“He has since gone to court, he’s in default right now, probation is looking for him and we’re hoping somebody out there knows where Samuel Hayes is,” says Delaney.
