Police: Overnight Car Fire Death not Suspicious

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) – Springfield police say the death of an elderly man whose body was found inside a burning car is not considered suspicious.

Police and fire crews responded to the intersection of Cottage Street and Industry Avenue just before midnight Monday where they found a car engulfed in flames.

After the fire was put out, crews discovered a body inside the car.

Police spokesman Sgt. John Delaney said in a statement that witnesses told police the car blew up. He said it’s being treated as an unattended death and possible suicide.

Springfield Police tell ABC40 the body was severely burned, and it may take several days to identify the victim.
