Police Identify Woman Killed on I-91 Southbound

LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WGGB) — Investigators have identified the woman killed while she was on foot on Interstate 91 early Tuesday morning.

State Police spokesperson David Procopio says that around 2:30 a.m., troopers assigned to the Springfield barracks were called out for a report that a pedestrian has been struck by a tractor trailer on the southbound side of I-91, right near the Connecticut line in Longmeadow.

Procopio adds that the preliminary investigation shows that 22-year-old Shamonica Bates of Hartford, Conn. was an occupant of a 2006 Nissan Maxima, along with five other people from Connecticut.

“For reasons still under investigation, Ms. Bates exited the motor vehicle and was on foot in the path of the tractor-trailer. The truck struck her, causing fatal injuries,” Procopio explains in a statement released Tuesday afternoon.

Several miles of I-91 were closed for some time while crews worked to investigate the collision and clear the scene. The lanes were reopened by 6:15 a.m.

The incident remains under investigation by Mass. State Police.
