Pulitzer Prize Winning Journalist Speaks at STCC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Pulizter Prize winning journalist Isabel Wilkerson spoke at a diversity initiatives event for Springfield Technical Community College.

Students, teachers, diversity council members, and book admirers filled the auditorium to listen to Wilkerson’s words.

The successful author talked about what she found while traveling within the country.

From visiting senior centers and baptist churches to casting calls, Wilkerson gathered over 1,200 interviews in 15 years.

“My goals were to understand this phenomenon that changed the 20th century, changed America through the lives of individual people and to capture the stories before it was too late,” Wilkerson explains.

Wilkerson says she wanted to capture what it was like for an African American living in the world of the South before the Civil Rights movement. She adds that as a nation, we all have more in common than we think – all of us having some kind of migration in our histories to get to America.
