State Lawmakers Weigh Affordable Housing Bills

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERABOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts lawmakers are weighing dozens of bills that would make changes to the state’s main affordable housing law.

The Legislature’s Committee on Housing has scheduled a public hearing Tuesday to take up 34 of the bills, many of which target the law known as 40B, which sets a goal of 10 percent affordable housing for cities and towns.

Advocates of affordable housing credit the law with creating tens of thousands of affordable units in the state over the last four decades.

But the law has its share of critics, who fault it for allowing developers to skirt local zoning laws in some communities if they promise to include a certain percentage of affordable units in their projects.

In 2010, voters rejected a ballot question that would have rolled back the law.
