Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox came out ahead in the first game of the World series, beating the St. Louis Cardinals 8-1.

Although the Cards’ Carlos Beltran robbed the Red Sox of a grand slam with his over-the-wall catch at the bottom of the second inning, that may have cost his team too much. In the next inning, he left the game with a right rib contusion and was taken to the hospital for X-rays. Whether this could be a series-defining injury remains to be seen.

It wasn’t quite the shutout the Red Sox were hoping for, with the Cardinals getting one run in the top of the 9th, but it’s only the first in a series of seven games. The first team to win four games will be crowned the winner of the 2013 World Series.

Game 2, which will also take place in Boston, will air Thursday at 7:30/6:30c on Fox.
