Awkward's Beau Mirchoff: Matty Is Embarrassed and Heartbroken Over Jenna Cheating
by Robyn Ross
There’s nothing worse in high school than learning your girlfriend has cheated on you … unless you catch her in the act in front of all your friends.
On the Awkward premiere on Tuesday (10:30/9:30c, MTV), Matty (Beau Mirchoff) threw his girlfriend Jenna (Ashley Rickards) a surprise birthday party, but was hit with his own surprise when she obliviously walked in making out with Colin (Nolan Funk). How will the high school hottie deal with the big betrayal?
“He’s angry at first,” Mirchoff tells TVGuide.com. “He’s embarrassed but ultimately he’s heartbroken because this is his first love. It’s taken Matty two seasons to become mature and be cool with Jenna, and now she’s done this.” Even Rickards admits that this wasn’t her character’s finest moment. “It’s clearly not the most graceful way for that information to come out,” she says. “Poor Matty! It’s just so out of the blue. He never saw it coming.”
As the shock sets in, Matty will try to figure out exactly what went wrong with the relationship. “Matty goes through all the scope of emotions,” Mirchoff says. “Initially he wonders if he’s at fault, but then he realizes he’s not limited to her circle of friends and her life [and wants to see] what else life has to offer.” And in high school, that means more romances. “The best way to get over someone is to find new love so maybe Matty goes on the prowl,” Mirchoff adds.
Fortunately for Matty, he’s also got a lot of people by his side. Unfortunately for Jenna, it’s not so much with friends and support. “He confides in Sadie,” Mirchoff says. “She’s his closest friend and she is really great to him in the next few episodes and very protective of Matty.” Even Jake (Brett Davern) who was once at odds with Matty over Jenna is by his side. “Jake is really angry with Jenna,” he says. “She treated Jake so poorly when they were dating so I think this is adding onto the feelings he already had towards Jenna.”
As the show progresses, viewers will see how much Matty has matured emotionally and echoes Rickards’ previous sentiments about the turn the season is taking. “I’m glad they’re going darker,” Mirchoff says, “because you don’t always see this side of the popular teenage boy.”
