Spelling Bee Held to Raise Money for United Way

Spelling Bee

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — A spelling bee hoopla was held Thursday night to raise money for the United Way of the Pioneer Valley.

The event was hosted by Baystate Medical Center. Spelling experts from Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary were brought in to pick special words for the event. They normally organize spelling bees nationwide, but Thursday night their mission was to have some fun on the Basketball Hall of Fame Floor. Hundreds of employees from Baystate battled it out in a tough adult spelling bee. The United Way of the Pioneer Valley says fundraisers like tonight’s make their operations possible.

“About 60 groups are helped directly by the United Way that collects the funds and disperses them to those who need them the most,” explains Dr. Michael Bailin, Baystate Medical Center.

The United Way will continue to work with Baystate moving forward in a fundraising campaign. Local vendors donated supplies for tonight’s event.
