Driver Dies in Fiery Crash After Dodging Couch Cushions on I-91

IMG_7232LONGMEADOW (WGGB) — One driver is dead after an SUV collided with a tractor trailer and burst into flames on I-91 northbound in Longmeadow around 6:00 p.m. Sunday night.

The driver of the Jeep was killed, but State Police say the driver was the only person in the vehicle. That driver was pronounced dead on the scene. State Police believe there was only one person in the tractor trailer and that driver was not injured.

State Police say the accident was caused by couch cushions in the highway that had fallen off of another vehicle. Drivers were forced to swerve around the cushions, which is what led the two vehicles to collide.

Later on Sunday night, State Police said they were searching for the driver of a dark-colored SUV who was pulled over nearby just before the crash happened. They have not indicated why they are searching for that vehicle.

If you have any information, please call State Police at (413) 736-8390.

State Police re-opened all lanes to traffic on I-91 northbound. The highway had been shut down at the Connecticut state line, but that detour was lifted when the lanes re-opened.
