Menino, who’s retiring after two decades in office, confirmed the news to reporters at a public appearance Tuesday after it began leaking out.
The university has scheduled an announcement with Menino on Wednesday morning, but wouldn’t discuss the details Tuesday.
Menino said he will join BU’s Political Science/Urban Planning department in February for a new program on cities.
He said he’s “really excited” about the chance to work with students on the urban issues that have consumed his interest for decades.
In January Menino will be succeeded as mayor by state Rep. Martin Walsh of Boston, who won election last week.
Menino didn’t seek another term.
