Springfield Armor Prepare to Kick Off 2013-14 Season

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB)—-The Springfield Armor took to center court at the basketball hall of fame for media day on Wednesday. As the team prepares to kick off their 2013-14 campaign with a new coaching staff and new roster of players, they will all be looking to make their mark in the Hall of Fame City.

“Just being here and playing in the birth city of basketball is a blessing,” said Willie Reed, a returning 6’9″ forward.

“You know I told the guys let’s just go out there and make the people and the city proud,” said head coach Doug Overton. “Let’s put on a display of basketball like we know we should and hopefully people will come out and support us.”

While there are many new players on this year’s roster there will be one familiar face to Western Mass residents. Former Umass standout Gary Forbes has joined the team this season after attending training camp with the Brooklyn Nets.

“I’m still the same old me,” admitted Forbes. “I’m going to play as hard as I can. I’ll work harder than everyone else, give all my effort and everything else I learned while at Umass.”

After missing the playoffs last season the Armor will look to rebound this year with a rookie head coach leading the charge. NBA veteran Doug Overton was named head coach during the off-season and looks forward to his first season as a head coach. After an 11-year NBA career and numerous assistant coaching positions, Overton feels his previous experiences will only benefit him in his new job.

“I was never the guy who could dunk or just had tons of athletic ability,” said Overton. “I had to fight, claw and scratch my way up. I still have all these scars from playing and that’s all I ask of my team is that they play hard.”

“Just to have someone like that who has been there,” said Willie Reed. “Someone who can help you through that situation is definitely a blessing. He understands the place that we are all in and the goal we are all striving for.”

The Armor’s season kicks off on November 22nd on the road but they will be making their debut at the Mass Mutual Center on December 6th. For more home games and their entire 2013-14 schedule, click here.
