Gamers Wait Playstation 4, Legislators Debate Video Game Violence Study

PS4 launch picHOLYOKE, Mass (WGGB) — Gamers, rejoice! The long awaited Playstation 4 is just about ready to be released. It’s the first new Playstation product in over 8 years, and comes equipped with exclusive games and enhanced graphics.

Bundled up and bracing for the crowds, early Best Buy customers in Holyoke started lining up before 5PM Thursday. They told ABC40 whether they are buying for themselves or others, Playstation 4 is worth the wait.

“With my Red Bull, that’s how I am going to stay warm,” customer Nichole Ferris said. “I’m here to get my spoiled boyfriend a PS4. Life. He owes me life.”

“As soon as I heard that it was coming out in February and they had pre-orders, I was first one to sign up for a pre-order,” customer David Anthony said outside GameStop in West Springfield.

“I’m just excited to play ‘NBA’ and then it really looks like Lebron,” Rodrigo Santos said.

PS4 costs $400. Pre-ordered customers were allowed to start picking up at 10PM Thursday, but for everyone looking to buy leftover systems, the magic hour is midnight.

Upon the entire release, there are at least eight Playstation 4 games, some of which are exclusive to PS4. They cost about $60, the same price as Playstation 3 games.

“It took all this week’s paycheck to pay for everything that I wanted to get, and I still need to pay more,” Anthony said. “But it keeps me at home and keeps my girlfriend happy because I’m not going out.”

But the hype comes as State Senator William Brownsberger is proposing a study to investigate if violent games serve as training tools or simulators for real life violence. Gamers say the connection is baseless.

“I think it’s a waste of money because violence is in everything,” Anthony said. “At least in a video game you know it’s fake. It’s created by people. And on tv and in movies, it’s portrayed to be real.”

The study would still need a vote, it’s currently in debate on Beacon Hill.

If you didn’t get a PS4 Thursday night, you can go online or head back to retail stores in a few weeks.

Best Buy in Holyoke expects to get a new shipment of PS4 systems in plenty of time for Christmas. Next week, the biggest competition of PS4 will be released when the XBox 1 is released.
