PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) — The former manager of a Berkshire County sporting goods store described as being “like a son” to the owners has been sentenced to two years in jail for stealing tens of thousands of dollars from the business to support a heroin addiction.
John Jones of Sheffield was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to charges including larceny.
Authorities say he stole as much as $159,000 from Kenver Limited in Egremont.
Police say he faked returns, stole gift cards and told customers the credit card machines were down so they would pay cash, which he then pocketed.
Prosecutors say the owners were so fond of him they hosted his engagement party, bought him a truck and took him on vacations.
The Berkshire Eagle reports that the 37-year-old Jones expressed remorse in court.
