YWCA 10K Race Draws a Crowd

YWCA 10KSPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — The YWCA of Western Massachusetts hosted their first annual 10K Saturday.

The “Y Run for Women” race, sponsored by Health New England and Baystate Health, drew nearly 100 runners.

The money raised through the event will go to the YWCA’s mission of helping empower women, and helping them in crises like rape and domestic violence.

“I hold women’s issues close to my heart, my mom was homeless when I was twelve years old and had a lot of issues. And when you are 12 years old, you can’t do anything about it. And now that I am older, there is something I can do about it,” said runner Nicholas Colgin.

Sponsors were also pleased with the race’s turnout.

“I think it’s a great turn out, the runners seem to like it, and I think it will be even bigger next year,” said Bill Trudeau, President of the Insurance Center of New England.

To make the run even more special, a local woman, Kara Ryczek-Benson of Longmeadow, won the race.
