Purchasing Thanksgiving Dinner with SNAP Benefits
AGAWAM, Mass. (WGGB) — Thanksgiving is only a week away, and many families in Western Mass are already budgeting for the big dinner.
But what happens if you rely solely on SNAP Benefits to put food on the table?
According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a family of four receives $5.60 per meal.
Yesterday, ABC40’s Emily Volz went to Geissler’s Market in Agawam to find out.
While turkeys cost less than $1 per pound, it was impossible to find a bird under 10 pounds. She bought a small turkey breast for $9.78, which immediately put her over budget.
- Boxed mashed potatoes: $1.20
- Gravy: $1.00
- Stuffing: $1.50
- Cranberry sauce: $1.20
- Half of a pumpkin pie: $3.00
The grand total: $17.68.
It’s about $1 more than a family of four is allotted per day for breakfast, lunch and dinner — and well over the initial budget of $5.60.
