CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Virginia police say a state senator who was stabbed at his home was able to walk away from the house and was picked up by a cousin who was driving by.

Virginia State Police said Tuesday that after Deeds was stabbed in the head and chest, he was taken to his cousin’s house and 911 was called.

Police went to Deeds’ house and found his 24-year-old son, Gus, with a gunshot wound. Police say the son died there.

At an earlier news conference, Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller wouldn’t say who stabbed Deeds or how his son was shot, but she did say authorities were not looking for any suspects.

The senator’s son withdrew from William and Mary College last month.

His father ran for governor in 2009.
