Students Exhibit the Thanksgiving Spirit in West Springfield
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — These students from the St.Thomas school in West Springfield have formed an assembly line as they put together fruit baskets that will go to those in need in West Springfield, Agawam, and Feeding Hills.
Rose Desrosiers of the St.Thomas School says, “We have bananas, oranges, grapefruits. We also have grapes…a whole fruit basket for Thanksgiving, as well as candy and a snack pack.”
The outreach has been a tradition at St.Thomas for years.
Hundred of volunteers come together to put a smile on the families who will benefit from their generosity.
“We have a lot people. We just come together every year. I don’t have to make phone calls. They know we are doing it and they are here,” adds Barbara Amsden of the St. Thomas School.
The meals will be delivered to over 1,400 families Thursday.
These full fresh hot meals will represent more than just food on the table. They will show the caring spirit of the community
Amsden says, “Right now, we are peeling seven cases of butternut squash, 300 pounds of potatoes. We have already cooked 54 turkeys. We are getting set up the kids from St. Thomas that are coming down and they are going to make 500 fruit baskets.”
And those students will participate in all phases of the meal preparation.
“They are also going to help decorate the tables, roll silverware, cut rolls…do everything they need to do to help prepare for this dinner.”
