UMass Master Plan Moving Forward
AMHERST, Mass. (WGGB) — If you’ve been to the UMass Amherst Campus lately, there’s a lot of construction going on. It is part of the university’s master plan rolled out last year. Wednesday night, students and members of the community were given an update on its progress.
Dennis Swinford is the director of campus planning. He says the biggest project now is a new academic classroom near the campus pond that will open next fall. Swinford says what may be an annoyance now, will be worth it in the end. He adds, “There is a lot of construction going on and it’s impeded being able to walk around campus like you normally do. Being a pedestrian, like most students are on campus, there’s a lot to walk around and kind of live through the construction. So it’s like we’re redoing our kitchen in our house to some extent. It’s a bit inconvenient at this point in time, but it will be a lot better in the future once we get it all done.”
Construction will begin next year on three more projects. They include South College renovations, an integrated design building and renovation of the school of education’s Marks Meadow School. While the master plan includes many new buildings, it also includes renovating many of the heritage buildings on campus.
