9-Year-Old Critically Hurt in Pittsfield Fire

House Fire

PITTSFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — A Pittsfield boy is in a Boston hospital after suffering critical injuries in a fire Wednesday night.

Pittsfield Deputy Fire Chief Keith Phillips says that just before 8:00 p.m., crews were called out to 47 Merriam Street for a report of a fire.

When firefighters arrived, a second alarm was immediately called, which brought all on-duty personnel to the scene.

Phillips adds that a 9-year-old boy was rescued by firefighters from a second floor bedroom.

That boy was initially brought to Berkshire Medical Center where he was stabilized before being transported to Mass. General Hospital in Boston for further treatment.

Phillips notes that the boy is in critical condition.

A 23-year-old man was also transported to Berkshire Medical Center for smoke inhalation. His injuries are considered non-life threatening.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Phillips notes that it appears to be accidental in nature and may have started in the kitchen.
