Springfield Man Arrested for Assaulting Officer

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — A Springfield man is under arrest after police say he assaulted a police officer and harassed a police K9.

According to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney, around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, Springfield Police Officer Gail Gethins was called to the area of Dickinson Street to help Mass. State Police find a suspect.

Delaney adds that 23-year-old Thomas Delaney of Springfield allegedly approached Gethins’ cruiser and began to antagonize police K9 “Fix”, who was in the back seat, as he began to yell obscenities towards the K9 and grabbed the caged window.

Gethins then went back to the cruiser to have Thomas Delaney stop harassing the K9, when he reportedly turned toward Gethins and shoved her in the chest, knocking her to the ground.

Gethins regained her footing and placed Thomas Delaney under arrest. He is being charged with assault and battery on a police officer and mistreating or interfering with a police K9.

Thomas Delaney is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Springfield District Court.
