Lady in the Lake Actress Audrey Toter Dies at 95

Audrey Totter, a 1940s noir actress who appeared in Lady in the Lake, passed away Thursday at West Hills Hospital in Los Angeles. Totter, 95, had a stroke and suffered from congestive heart failure, her daughter Mea Lane told The Los Angeles Times.

Totter’s film career began with a small part in The Postman Always Rings Twice, but her breakthrough role came in 1947’s Lady in the Lake, where she played a publishing executive who hires Robert Montgomery to find her boss’ wife. She also appeared in The Set-UpHigh WallThe Unsuspected and Tension.

In 1952, Totter decided to focus on her family, marrying Dr. Leo Fed and giving birth to Mea. She later returned to acting. Her last credit was a 1987 episode of Murder, She Wrote.
