MIAMI (WGGB) — The New England Patriots were hoping to clinch the AFC East division and improve their position in the race for the top two playoff seeds in the conference Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.
However, the Dolphins were up to the test, as they fought for a playoff spot of their own.
It came down to the final seconds in a back-and-forth battle in Miami. Tom Brady and the Patriots had one final chance to win it from inside the Dolphins’ 20 yard line. But Brady was intercepted in the end zone as the clock ran out, and New England loses 24-20.
The Dolphins took the lead on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Tannehill to Marcus Thigpen with less than two minutes to play. That brought Miami back into the lead, after a 24-yard touchdown pass from Brady to Julian Edelman.
Brady finished with 364 yards passing and 2 touchdowns, but threw one interception. Tannehill was even better, as he tallied 312 yards passing and 3 touchdowns, without throwing a single pick.
The Patriots will take another shot at clinching the division next week, when they take on the defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens. That game has been moved out of prime time and will be played at 4:25 p.m.
