Mass. Gambling Panel Approves Revere Casino Waiver
BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts gambling regulators have taken another step toward allowing Revere residents to vote on a revised casino proposal.
The five-member panel voted unanimously on Thursday to approve Mohegan Sun’s request for a waiver from a rule that requires casino applicants to submit certified referendum results by Dec. 31.
Commissioners voted last week to allow Mohegan Sun to seek such a waiver, keeping alive a plan to build a Revere-only casino on land owned by the Suffolk Downs racetrack.
The proposal emerged after voters in East Boston rejected a plan from Suffolk Downs for a casino on the Boston-Revere border.
Mohegan Sun said the new referendum in Revere could be held within 60-90 days. If approved, it could compete with a Wynn Resorts proposal in Everett for the sole eastern Massachusetts casino license.
