Wilbraham Teachers and Parents Fight for Local Control of Education

school chalkboardWILBRAHAM, Mass. (WGGB) – A group against Common Core State Standards in the Hampden-Wilbraham Regional School District met Thursday night at the Wilbraham Library.

The Common Core Standards are an effort to unify public school education across the country. But the standards have been met with opposition from both teachers and parents.

The group of teachers and parents call themselves “Falcons for Educational Freedom” after Minnechaug Regional’s Mascot. They gathered for a public forum to discuss Common Core and listen to speaker Dr. Sandra Stotsky, who was on the state validation committee for the Common Core Standards, but is now an opponent.

“I applaud the groups in Massachusetts because they at least knew from the past ten years and their teachers did, that they had first class standards so now they are looking at standards that are lowering academic achievements and expectations in this state,” said Stotsky.

The group “Falcons for Educational Freedom” is looking to remove the Common Core Standards initiative in their school district and keep their curriculum under local control instead.
