Greenfield Woman Charged With Embezzling

court-5GREENFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A bookkeeper who worked for a Greenfield attorney has been charged with stealing about $450,000 from his law practice.

Prosecutors say 39-year-old Melissa Wright was released on personal recognizance after pleading not guilty this week to charges including check forgery and larceny.

Prosecutors allege Wright embezzled the money from attorney Mark Berson from about January 2008 until February 2012. Wright had been responsible for payroll, bookkeeping, and accounts payable and receivable at Berson’s law practice.

Berson uncovered the alleged fraud when he noticed some irregularities in his payroll and bookkeeping

The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that Wright’s voice mail box was full and her attorney could not be reached.

Prosecutors say the money is gone.
