Multiple Car Accidents Reported Due to Snow

CAR AXSPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — The winter weather today has caused numerous motor vehicle crashes across Western Mass. in a very short period of time.

Most of the incidents reported so far have been in the Springfield area where police say 20 accidents have taken place including one on St. James Avenue.  There, five vehicles were involved with two people sustaining non-life threatening injuries.

The State Police barracks in Springfield also reported earlier that they’ve also responded to a number of crashes due to the “slippery conditions.”

When we spoke to Agawam police, they said they were dealing with nine minor accidents so far today, including one on Route 57 in Agawam.

In Southwick, a police dispatcher we spoke with told us they’ve had about 5 minor motor vehicle accidents.

Early this afternoon, the Massachusetts State Police reduced speed limits on I-91 and 291 to 40 miles per hour. Those restrictions have since been lifted.

Emergency personnel are asking drivers to take care on the roadways this afternoon.
