Gus & Paul’s May Be Closing Its Doors

GUS & PAULSSPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — The final day of 2013 could be the final day of business for one extremely popular local bakery.

Gus & Paul’s Bakery and Deli on Sumner Avenue in Springfield could be closing its doors for the last time.

In a posting on the shop’s facebook page, Owner Gordon Weissman writes that he’s “trying to get something worked out,” but he’s not sure if he will reopen after Tuesday night’s close.

“Tomorrow may be my last day at 1209. Trying to get something worked out but i will be closing new years eve at 8pm and i am not sure if i will reopen and certainly not till valentines day the earliest. so if you need a G n P fix tomorrow could be your last chance……..Gordie”

The message was punctuated with a frowning face saying “sorry, we’re closed.” Many customers responded immediately with their own frowning face emoticons and writing “say it isn’t so.”

Back in February, the bakery closed temporarily after being seized by the state for non-payment of reportedly more than $57,000 in taxes.

Gus & Paul’s closes at 8:00 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.

At least Harrels hair is clean and its just ice cream, not confections from the 50′s and 60′s. Take a bath and close and funigate Then make a smaller store with deli and 20 bakery items including bagels and rye bread. Give it a shot what do you have to lose?

A clean barbershop? That’s an oxy moron if I ever heard onme. You don’t think roaches eat Ice cream eh? What part of him not making money do you not get? A smaller store isn’t worth the time it takes to bake the products. Stupid ideas. You can suggest all the things you want, in the end it’s all been tried before, and lost before.

The self centeredness of some people is so outrageous it’s beyond comical. “Open a mini bakery and just sell the three items I like. You’ll get rich”. Oh well, I guess it is new years morning. Bound to be some drunken and foolish posts up.

I am still amazed at how crummy this dump was, and how very mediocre his goods were, and wonder why it was so popular? When it was Gus and Paul running it there was pride, but that has waned over the years to struggling just for mediocrity, to not caring at all. Supermarket bake shops are fresher, and taste better. My guess is people just enjoyed that “hangout and have a a coffee too” kind of place, and the feeling they were at a old style bakery, getting something special. You weren’t…

Guys like this sour over the years and start cutting corners thinking nobody will notice, but people do notice. Then when they have no customers left they wonder why.

  • TheScottishWeasel

Where is the MSPCA when you need them? The poor roaches will be homeless now, MILLIONS of them. I hope they do an intervention and rescue them.

Oh and BTW, if it were “extremely popular” then it would not be closing.
