Dangerous Cold Moving Through Western Mass.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Frigid temperatures have been moving through New England, creating a dangerous situation.

“The thing about this particular cold is that not only is it coming with a snowstorm, it’s alos the wind chill,” said ABC40 First Warning Meteorologist Dan Brown, “It’s making it feel like it’s as cold as 15 degrees below zero.”

The cold conditions aren’t getting any better. According to Dan, this could be a record-breaker. “Tonight the wind will relax but the temperature will free-fall to daily record lows, and quite possibly to an all-time record low at Westover Air Reserve Base, which is -22 degrees set back in 1959.”

Those bitter cold temperatures are a real problem for the number of homeless individuals in the pioneer valley.

“We want people to know that what’s coming after the snow is this 15 degrees below zero, and they gotta be somewhere,” said Bill Miller from Springfield’s Friends of the Homeless, “If that’s with a friend, that’s fine, but otherwise they gotta make their way to the shelter.”

Even if you’re just out and about or shoveling snow, there are some symptoms and warning signs for hypothermia, they include:
- Confusion
– Dizziness
– Exhaustion
– Lethargy
– Severe Shivering

If you notice any of these symptoms you should go inside and find warmth and seek medical attention. If you see a homeless person out in the elements, you should contact police.
