Western Mass. Braces for Bitter Cold

REGION (WGGB) — If you thought Friday morning was cold, wait until you wake up Saturday.

Forecasters are calling for temperatures to dip below zero and wind chills to be brutally cold.

Eleven degrees above zero. Sad to say that might be as good as it gets as we start the weekend.

If the main course was snow, the dessert is a frozen foray into near-record temps

“The cold…I’d be careful about the cold. I work outside for a living and i can usually handle it but even this morning doing my driveway i could feel it,” says Thomas Heath of Chicopee.

And we will all feel it tomorrow morning with an over 100-degree drop from our high on July 19.

Jim Adams of Chicopee adds, “It’s supposed to drop to -10, with the wind. That’s gonna be a little chilly. Just dress for it and you’re fine. [You can smile about -10. Your a better man than me, Jim] I don’t mind this weather whatsoever. Get outside, you move get the exercise, keeps you nice and warm.”

“[Negative temperature…you like negative temperatures? Positive temperatures?] I’m a tropical person,” explains Juan Arce of Springfield.

Anything but tropical here in western Massachusetts, but some had no choice, but to wake up to the cold reality of winter

“It’s ridiculous. It’s freezing. I had to wake up, I got three hours of sleep. I had to shovel my driveway and then I came to work for six in the morning,”

Heath adds, “This morning, it was 7 [degrees] with a wind chill of like -12. Tomorrow…I wouldn’t even recommend going out if you don’t have to.”

We could test the all-time low of -22 degrees set back in 1959.

Anything lower than that could test the resolve of hardcore New Englanders

On the plus side, the temps are expected to rebound later in the weekend
