Sen. Warren to Focus Policy on Finances

elizabeth-warrenBOSTON (AP) — As she enters her second year in Congress, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren said she’s focused on improving the economic futures of American families.

The Massachusetts Democrat tells The Associated Press that includes reining in student debt, easing the nation’s retirement crisis and doubling funding for federal research programs.

Warren has also positioned herself as a passionate defender of Social Security, even opposing President Barack Obama on changes she said would weaken a key protection for millions of older Americans.

Another issue Warren is fired up about is soaring student loans, which she says are leaving new graduates with suffocating debts.

Warren also says she supports doubling spending for the National Institutes for Health and the National Science Foundation, saying it could help speed treatment breakthroughs for diseases like Alzheimer’s.
