SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — When young women enter the sisterhood, they dedicate their lives to the Catholic church, living under vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
At one time, some 1,000 women were Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield.
Those numbers have dwindled through the years and many nuns are facing hard times.
So Friday, members of the Friends of Mater Dolorosa gave a donation to the Sisters of St. Joseph to help.
SSJ of Springfield President Maxyne Schneider says the money will help offset the growing financial needs of the sisters – needs that are much greater than expected.
“Two things happened at an unexpected rate. One was the rate of retirement of sisters from paid ministry and the second was the impact that property, buildings that now were too large for the number of sisters, the impact that would have on our finances,” Schneider explains.
The money was raised by spaghetti suppers and a number of other fundraisers.
