Early Education Commissioner Pleased with Governor’s Budget Proposal

THOMAS WEBER, COMMISSIONER DEPARTMENT OF EARLY EDUCATION AND CARESPRINGFIELD, Mass (WGGB) — Some $30 million of the $205 million more in education funding in the Governor’s budget proposal will go to early childhood education.

Commissioner Thomas Weber says more than $3 million will go toward full day kindergarten grants to help districts that now only offer half days. He adds, “The investment in early education should allow us to serve about 4 thousand additional children next year. Currently, the state is helping about 54 thousand children with a subsidy to attend early education and care programs and this is going to allow us to expand on that by an additional 4 thousand statewide. “

Right now, 90 percent of the children across the state have access to full time kindergarten.
